Special Needs Program

After developing an easy and systematic program using the principles, philosophy and techniques of Taijiquan (Tai Chi), an ancient martial art originating in China, I found that such a program can benefit our friends who have physical and mental handicaps. Since 1999, I have been running this program for over 200 clients who attend facilities for handicapped adults in Southeastern Pennsylvania. In groups of 1 to 50, I have introduced this system with wonderful results.
The key to any martial art or exercise is repetition and constant focus. Results are evident every step of the way, however slow and subtle. Week after week, the participants started to remember the name of the movement and generally how it was done. Through this weekly practice, the participants gained muscle strength and greater movement. They witnessed a stronger connection with the helpers and me as we guided their arms through the movements. Tai Chi exercise has been proven to lower blood pressure and improve balance. Other benefits include loosening of joints and relief from arthritis and scar tissue pain. Better blood circulation and a stronger flow of energy (chi) are benefits that make the participant have a greater feeling of well-being.

My purpose now is to spread this system so all our friends with physical and mental challenges can benefit and have fun with this wonderful art of Tai Chi.
I have documented a very basic procedure in this packet that can be followed by any care professional. The more practice the care professional does, the more at ease the professional would be implementing the techniques on a daily schedule, instead of my once a week. Not only will that care professional have a whole new catalog of exercises to do with their clients, but in the practice of the techniques and principles of Tai Chi, the care professional will have great benefit in their own lives. A physically fit, calm and enthusiastic person is great to be around and they are the kind of co-worker all businesses look for.
